Controlled atmosphere testing

Another way to test the degradation caused by a particular factor in a solar cell is using a controlled atmosphere. An experiment performed by Gevorgyan et al. proved how different atmosphere influences the stability of the cellDOI:10.1016/j.solmat.2008.02.008DOI:10.1016/j.solmat.2011.01.023. In vacuum conditions the lifetime was of 10000 hours, while in a nitrogen environment it was of 2700 h. A chamber filled with oxygen showed that the cell was dying very fast, i.e. in 74 h. Finally, using a chamber with high humidity caused degradation of the contained cell within 11 hours. The importance of this kind of approach for studying the factors causing degradation is crucial and can be effectively exploited in order to understand the mechanisms of degradation.
